A Quaint South African Town

Those seeking solace and a tranquil break from the urban lifestyle can find accommodation in Stanford, a quaint town nestled in the Overberg Area of the Western Cape. The Cape Victorian and Edwardian architecture are testament to Stanford’s stronghold on their colourful history. The landscape is also incredibly beautiful and there are genuine conservation efforts to maintain the unique fauna and flora. It is one of the few towns along the Cape Whale Coast Route and it was built along the Klein River in between majestic mountains and the ocean. The river emanates a sense of calm and is home to an abundant bird life.

Being in Stanford is like going back in time to when people appreciated the simpler things in life. The town embodies all the quaint elements of a country lifestyle where many Capetonians come to escape for a weekend getaway. It is set between Hermanus and Grootbos, almost two hours from Cape Town. The perfect distance where you can feel as if you are getting away but don’t have to drive too far. Several holiday homes have been purchased by people having an on-going love affair with this Victorian town.

A Break from Urban Life

Urbanites can, on occasion, be initially dumbfounded by the idea of such quiet and tranquillity. With no hooting, traffic noise, alarms or constant chatter to distract, the country life can take some getting used to. It is once people step foot into the clean open air and receive their first welcoming smile that most fall in love with this charming destination and sink into the relaxing ambience with ease. The activities are endless with outdoor adventures and places that will excite your sensory palate.

In town there is a micro-brewery, delectable wine estates, a cheese-maker and bistros that all strive to provide an unforgettable taste sensation. Every small business or service is personal and an intimate transaction. In Stanford you are never just a number but someone that they want to get to know, and this endearing hospitality extends to the helpful staff at Grootbos. There are several artists that have made this their home and inspiration, adding an artistic flair that is flourishing in this small dorpie.

A meander through the month-end Friday market or early morning Saturday market is always pleasant as locals sell their fresh produce with great ardour. For a stimulating day you can go horseback riding, hiking, quad biking or go on a wine tour. This magnificent accommodation offers safaris like you have never heard before – whale watching from land, air or sea; shark cage diving for an intimate encounter with a great white shark, and 4x4 flower safaris that enlighten guests about the intricate symbiotic relations of the indigenous flora and fauna.

What's new at Grootbos - New Garden Lodge and Florilegium

The last year has been a busy one at Grootbos. We rebuilt our beloved Garden Lodge entirely and re-opened it in April 2022. We also officially launched the Grootbos Florilegium - Africa's first contemporary florilegium - which is a collection of botanical illustrations created by local and international artists, depicting the charismatic plants found on our reserve and the surrounding regions.
