It has been confirmed! There is leopard roaming the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve!

landmark foundation logo

Only four days after setting up two cameras at Grootbos in the Western Cape’s Overberg region, Jeannine McMannus of the Landmark Foundation (www.landmarkfoundation.org.za) has confirmed what we have all been hoping for. LEOPARD!!!

 leopard at grootbos

Jeannine informs us that the Leopard is a healthy young male in excellent condition. We are incredibly excited and feel privileged that such majestic creatures live in our reserve. Along with the leopard, the cameras managed to capture various small antelopes, perhaps his preferred meal. It is an incredible triumph for Landmark Foundation and more importantly the conservation of the Overberg region.

This initiative forms part of Jeannine’s PhD which she is doing with the University of Witwatersrand. Her research is ongoing and aims to better understand the illusive leopard in order to protect them and the essential ecological processes they provide.

The cameras will be in place for another 15 or so weeks and we can’t wait to see what else, or rather who else, pays us a visit. We will keep you posted with the latest updates. Here’s to the thrill of conservation!

That is phenomenal news! I chatted to Christoff a few weeks ago (when out on a Fynbos walk) about the occurrence of leopards on Grootbos and he mentioned the cameras that had been set up. Great to hear that they've already managed to capture the young male leopard - nice work guys! Keep us posted on what other specials you manage to find... Gary ConsiderAfrica.com

in 2009 and again on a visit in 2010 we saw what we thought were leopard tracks, certainly a biggish type of cat - so it's brilliant to learn that you now have this exciting evidence ; good luck to all at Grootbos.

faaaaaantastic hope he is not on his own!

Great news - what an amazing place we live in. I see leopard spoor all the time in the Groenlandberg, Hottentots Holland and Kogelberg mountains when I'm guiding but not a whisker of a live one (though I'm sure they see me ...) I'd love to get a detailed breakdown of their diet down here in the Cape - any information out there?
  • Grootbos
Sure Fynbos Guy! You can find info on the Landmark Foundation's website (landmarkfoundation.org.za). There's a complete presentation of the ongoing projects and more.

Wow!!!! Amazing! I've got goosebumps.... What a huge achievement & reward. Thank you Grootbos.

This is really great news, awesome!!

Awesome, awesome and awesome again. Having been raised in the Cape, tracked leopard in the Cederburg, but never ever having seen one, I am really excited to know that you have found one on the reserve. Now you can boast the marine five and one other! And what an "other" that is. If there is one.......
