The most important elements which makes fynbos fynbos are the proteas, the restios and ericas. Fynbos also hosts a variety of animals such as insects, reptiles, birds and a few smaller mammals.

Sharlene told the boys what a plant needs in order to survive. She also showed them the correct way to plant a plant. Each boy got the opportunity to plant their own aloe, which they could take home.

The boys then each made a mobile out of pictures of examples of things found within the fynbos ecosystem.

We then moved up to the paddock, where Bulelani played a game with the boys. Some of the boys were chosen as trees and had to stand in a fixed position and had to stand with their hands in the air.

Two boys were chosen to be it. The other players could use the trees as protection. Now and again, the coach would ‘chop down’ one of the ‘trees, who would then become one of the regular players. As there are fewer trees, less shelter is available. The environmental message is that trees give us shelter, provide food, help etc.

Thank you to the Green Futures team for hosting the kids and also to the Football Foundation coaches and volunteers for facilitating!
