Green Futures visits the Green Trade Day

Last week, the Green Futures students, their fearless leaders, and a volunteer from the USA ventured out of their typical classroom setting to explore the world of horticulture from a fresh perspective.

This month's trip was to the Cape Green Outdoor Lifestyle Trade Day at the Three Arts Theatre in Cape Town. The Trade Day featured a range of plants and products - from seeds to trees, pots, paving, chemicals, cars, and all sorts of things in between.

At the event, students meandered about, looking at beautiful plants, the latest fertilizers, techniques, and gadgets - including a broom that will rake leaves better than ANYTHING else on the market, complete with neon green plastic bristles and an enthusiastic three year guarantee!

Some of the booths also had food or games for the students to participate in, like using magnets to go fishing in a little swimming pool for plastic magnetic fish to win fish-shaped candy. Next, for the first time in some of their lives, the students had the opportunity to explore the Cape Town waterfront, after a quick lunch at KFC.

The day ended with a stop at Van den Berg's Garden Centre, a nursery near Cape Town, and we all made it out just in time to miss the heavy evening traffic!
