Grootbos Receives a Special Commendation at the Greening the Future awards

This was the eighth year that the Mail & Guardian has hosted the Greening the Future Awards, held annually in June to celebrate Environment Month. The winners and finalists attended a gala dinner in Johannesburg on the 23rd of June, at which Lewis Pugh gave the keynote address.

Grootbos was nominated in the Schools & Institutions category in recognition for the work done by the Grootbos Foundation though our Green Futures Horticultural and Life Skills College, Growing the Future Food Production and Life Skills Training and Football Foundation. Although, we did not win the category, we did receive a ‘Special Commendation’ for the impact that these programmes have on the biodiversity of the Reserve and surrounding area, while implementing social development projects in local communities.

The Greening the Future judges were impressed with the wholistic approach given to the environmental knowledge sharing at Grootbos. They praised the life skills colleges, the programme’s creation of jobs and ongoing commitment of the individuals involved.

“The initiatives are providing important opportunities in a neglected area. It’s a quality programme and a model of the difference a small team can make in a community”, the judges said.

We would like to congratulate the winners, the JNF (Jewish National Fund) Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre for winning this prestigious award!
