Dibanisa Lesson 4.1: Sustainability in Fynbos

Posted under Eco-Tourism Blog by Grootbos on 7th November 2011

Last week’s Dibanisa lesson took place at Growing the Future on Grootbos. Viola told the children about farming sustainably within a fynbos environment.

She also told the children more about organic farming. We then walked through the organic vegetable garden, looked at the chickens, pigs and composting area.

Lise Bosman, a local nutritionist, told the kids about the importance of eating healthily.

The kids picked spinach leaves, fresh from the garden.

And then made a salad of their fresh spinach leaves, tomatoes, onions, boiled egg and tinned pilchards. The kids seasoned their salad with lemon juice, salt, pepper and some vegetable oil.

Lise told the kids the importance of each element and tested them on how well they listened! They then ate their salad!

For this week’s lesson, we would like to thank Viola, the Die Bron teachers (Annemarie and Carina) and Susan for driving, as well as the Natasha, Kaizer and Jakob from the Football Foundation! We look forward to our lesson next week, which will be about creating art out their environment!
