Dibanisa Lesson 6: A Visit to Growing the Future!

Posted under Eco-Tourism Blog by Grootbos on 14th June 2011

On the 9th of June, we visited the Growing the Future project, which forms part of the Grootbos Foundation's projects! We met with Viola Siyotywa, Growing the Futures Life Skills trainer and co-project manager of the project.

Viola talked about sustainability and told the children more about organic farming, which is what is practised at the project. We went for a walk through the vegetable gardens situated amongst the magnifcent fynbos! We then had a walk through the hot house where we saw various seeds that have germinated, waiting to be planted in the veggie garden! We then had a look at the 3 resident piglets and chickens who lay free range eggs! Viola showed us the composting bins, which is also used to make worm tee that is used as an organic fertiliser!

The girls and boys then had a lesson with Lise Bosman, who is a nutritionist. Lise told us more about food and why we should eat healthily. The children had the opportunity to pick their own lettuce for their salads. We made a salad with our homegrown lettuce, tomatoes, onions, eggs and pilchards. Lise also explained why each ingredient is important to our well being. The children had the opportunity to try something new and had their salad for lunch!

We would like to thank Viola and Lise for their time and their contribution! We would also like to thank the Football Foundation volunteers, Amy and Slu for their help!

We look forward to our farewell session, which will be the camp to be held at Witvoetskloof!
