First Whales arrive in the Walker bay!

Posted under Marine Life Blog by Grootbos on 20th April 2011

Yesterday we were fortunate enough to welcome the first Southern right whales back into the Walker bay. We initially spotted the two whales, mother and calf, swimming just behind the breakers at Die Plaat in De Kelders. They then cruised along the entire De Kelders coast line for approximately 2 hours as if overjoyed to be back in their beloved breeding ground, the Walker Bay. Grootbos guests got to see the marvellous display and were delighted that they got to experience such quality whale watching as early as 19 April 2011 (Wow!). Although the first whales are now arriving, whale sightings can only be guaranteed as from the 1 of June. The Whale seasons offcially runs from June to December. We have decided to name the first mother whale Primera and should we get any sightings of her again, we will be sure to keep you posted. Watch the below movie to see Primera and her calf in action yesterday!
