Spread Your Wings

Grootbos and the surrounding area is a hotspot for rare and endemic birds feeding and breeding in the diverse habitats. From fynbos and afromontane forests to rocky coasts and estuaries, the area supports a huge variety of species within a very small radius.

Whether you’re a serious birder or if you just enjoy spending time in nature, our knowledgeable guides are geared to give you an engaging presentation of the winged wonders that enliven our skies and flora – from a leisurely stroll through the fynbos to a dedicated birding tour. There are several trails leading out from the Grootbos Lodge into the surrounding hills and forests although you hardly need to leave your room to see an incredible variety of species.

A few of the highly sought after ‘specials’ on the reserve include the Black Harrier, the Knysna Woodpecker, the Southern Tchagra and the Cape Rock Thrush.

Coastal Birding Tour

Grootbos, in partnership with Dyer Island Cruises, can also offer guests a ‘Marine Big 5’ cruise to Dyer Island, where coastal endemics such as the African Black Oystercatcher, Hartlaub’s Gull, Bank Cormorant, the endangered African Penguin as well as the Cape Gannet flourish. Pelagic species such as the Shy Albatross, Sooty Shearwater and Giant Petrels are also seen at certain times of the year.

The Perfect Nest

Grootbos is perfectly situated to serve as your home base for birding in the Overberg region. Besides the pristine fynbos habitat on our doorstep, which supports over 125 different bird species, 26 of which are endemic, we are in close proximity to several other I.B.A’s (Important Birding Areas) like Stanford, Danger Point and Dyer Island. Our information points are well stocked with a variety of the latest birding literature, a fully updated bird list is available on request and our guides are available to assist at all times.
