Meet the Change Makers

For an overview of the various community and conservation projects of the Grootbos Foundation and a chance to meet the inspiring people behind the scenes, join Grootbos on an interactive and enlightening Social Responsibilty Tour.

From Fynbos to Football

First off, we’ll visit the Green Futures project, a Horticulture and Life Skills College set in a beautiful stone-clad building surrounded by Milkwood trees with far reaching views over Walker Bay. Here you can meet the students while they tend to their seeds and cuttings in the college’s greenhouse; water and prune the indigenous plants in the nursery; or attend a theory session in the classroom.

Then we’ll take a short, scenic drive through the reserve to the Growing the Future project. Here you can meet the inspiring women of this Food Production and Life Skills College and see the fruits of their labour: row upon row of leafy, organic vegetables; beehives dotted amongst the fynbos; free-range chickens; free-range pigs; and much more.

After that it’s another quick drive to visit our Youth Development Programme at the Gansbaai Communal Sports Centre where we can see over a hundred children and young adults from the local community taking part in various sport and educational activities at this superb facility.

At your request, we can also arrange a visit to the local township of Masakane for an insightful glimpse into the life and times of this thriving community.

At any point, you can combine this tour with a visit to our forest rehabilitation project, Future Trees. Get your hands dirty, put down some roots and contribute to the greening of our globe. You’ll receive a certificate and the GPS co-ordinates of your tree so you can locate it the next time you visit.

A Living Legacy

A Social Responsibility Tour adds a whole new layer of significance to so many aspects of the Grootbos experience. From the beautifully landscaped gardens to the fresh organic produce served in our restaurants, almost everything is permeated by our endeavour to uplift the local community while promoting the conservation of our unique biodiversity.
