Wine for the Soul

Take a heavenly meander up the winding road of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (Afrikaans for “Heaven and Earth”) and find yourself in a divine wine paradise.

The natural beauty of the towering mountain peaks, tree-lined rivers and the exquisite fynbos set the scene for the region’s most established and acclaimed wine route.

The first person to recognize the inherent potential of the valley was advertising magnate Tim Hamilton Russell, who during the 70’s had been searching for the perfect terroir to produce wines in the classic French style. His pursuit of excellence together with winemaker Peter Finlayson, established the valley’s reputation for producing exceptional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

While these varietals continue to impress and delight, the winemakers demonstrate no lack of innovation, as an adventurous tasting will attest to. From single and newly introduced varietals to complex blends, the wines are terroir driven and attention to quality is paramount.

The valley’s close proximity to the sea as well as its unique geography and soil diversity are the key contributors to the exceptional quality of its wines.

Today there are over 16 vineyards along an official Hermanus Wine Route offering tastings in well-appointed cellars with magnificent views and charming countryside. There are several restaurants, delis, farm stalls and even food and wine pairing to entice you to dwell in this heavenly realm a little longer.
