Grootbos Moment - Paradise Flycatcher

Posted under Fynbos and Flora Blog by Grootbos on 13th April 2011

Walking along the cobbled pathways leading to our cottages at Forest Lodge, the dense canopy of the Milkwood Forest providing welcome shade on this warm Autumn day, I came across a guests that was creeping through the thicket surrounding the trees- looking skywards into the dense foliage . She looked somewhat “spaced out”, her usually neatly combed hair, quite tousled. Curious, I asked her if I could help her, still unsure on why she was sneaking through the trees. Slightly startled, she giggled and told me that she had just enjoyed the most amazing massage by our therapist, Mirko, in the middle of the Milkwood forest. The sublime experience of being surrounded by nature, hearing the birds calling and the trees creaking was by far a much better experience than lying in a massage room listening to recordings of whale calls or typical zen-like music. Realizing that this was the reason for her somewhat altered appearance, I smiled and asked why she was rumbling through the bushes.  Another giggle, she explained that she had heard a distinctively harsh call of a bird whilst having her massage and as she was leaving the forest, she thought she’d try to catch a glimpse of it. I waited with her for a while, our patience rewarded by the sight of the Paradise Flycatcher.
