CELEBRATING A ONCE-IN-TWENTY-YEAR FLORAL REVIVAL

A BOTANICAL MARVEL SPARKED BY WILDFIRE

A vibrant cycle of renewal has been ignited at Grootbos. A radiant spectrum of pyrophilic, or ‘fire-loving’ blooms is transforming 20km² of the reserve, a botanical awakening unseen since the wildfires of 2006. Witness a cascade of colour as tapestries of fynbos skirt ancient Afromontane forests and 1,000-year-old Milkwood canopies. The dynamic flow between Grootbos’ micro-climates has nurtured over 1,030 recorded plant species, including seven new to science since 2001. Many of these rare blooms are illustrated and exhibited in our world-renowned Florilegium.

THE ELEMENTAL DANCE BETWEEN FIRE AND FYNBOS

A MULTIFACETED MASTERPIECE OF REGENERATION

For over 35 years, wildfires have expressed their glowing, restorative signatures on Grootbos’ landscapes.

After the January 2026 wildfires blazed through 2,000 hectares of the reserve, seeds stored underground for twenty years are sprouting over the next two years. Radiant irises and fire lilies paint green fields with the bright tones of wildfires, while proteas and ericas bloom with renewed vigour to trace warm Walker Bay sunsets. This floral treasure trove is further unlocked by sunbird-pollinated orchids and the rare, endemic Gladiolus overbergensis.

Wildfires are not a threat to a fynbos biome, they’re essential for biodiversity to thrive.

What's new at Grootbos - New Garden Lodge and Florilegium

The last year has been a busy one at Grootbos. We rebuilt our beloved Garden Lodge entirely and re-opened it in April 2022. We also officially launched the Grootbos Florilegium - Africa's first contemporary florilegium - which is a collection of botanical illustrations created by local and international artists, depicting the charismatic plants found on our reserve and the surrounding regions.
