Day 1 - Overview

Arrive at Grootbos and enjoy a delicious lunch before checking in to your family-friendly suite. After some relaxation time, one of our guides will show you the facilities and then you’ll head off on a fun treasure hunt through the forest and fynbos! An early dinner will be arranged for your kids with a special menu, after which the adults can indulge in a relaxed 5-course dinner while child-minders take care of your little ones in the playroom.

Day 2 - Overview

Start the day bright and early as the children head to the small farm next to the stables to collect their eggs for breakfast. After breakfast, visit the beach where children will learn about inter-tidal zones and see a stone-age cave. Then it’s time for a delicious picnic lunch as you explore rock pools and spend time playing in the sand. In the afternoon, return to the lodge for a pony ride in the paddock. That evening, kids can enjoy a special dinner in the playground, followed by a fun night walk as they discover frogs in the area. Then it’s time for the adults to relax with another delectable dinner while their kids are cared for.

Day 3 - Overview

Wake up for a quick cup of tea or coffee and snack, before heading off as a family to Kleinbaai Harbour. Here you’ll go on an exciting boat trip to see dolphins, penguins, seals, sharks and whales (whale season is from June – December). Get back to the lodge and enjoy a delicious brunch and then plant a special family tree on our reserve. After a light lunch, go on a Day in the Life of a Strandloper tour, which introduces you to the history of the Khoisan people who lived here in prehistoric times. End the day off with a magical farewell family dinner in the boma under the light of the stars.

Day 4 - Overview

Go egg collecting again before breakfast and then head down to the stables afterwards to help feed the horses and farm animals. Depart Grootbos with a host of wonderful family memories to take with you.

Feel connected to the vivid landscapes and pristine natural surroundings when staying in the luxurious freestanding suites. Sink into the splendour of the endless views from your private freestanding private suite, each with its own private deck, fireplace and outdoor shower.


Start each day with a hearty and delicious breakfast made from locally sourced ingredients. Freshly baked bread, freshly squeezed juices and a variety of fresh fruit. Our executive chef, Benjamin Conradie is ready to cater to any specific tastes and requirements.


Refuel and recharge with a delicious seasonal menu, and you will be ready to explore for the rest of the day. All of our dishes are made from the freshest ingredients sourced straight from our organic farm and from the local harbours.


A bountiful local produce from Growing the Future farm provides Head Chef Ben Conradie and his team with only the best ingredients. They have mastered the culinary art of enhancing natural flavours to create mouth-watering selections for an exquisite journey in taste sensations.


Transfers to/from both included and additional activities are included in your rate. Airport transfers can be arranged with reservations prior to arrival at an additional cost.


Head out into the fynbos on foot with your expert nature guide. Discover the deep ancient Afro-Montane or nearby ancient Milkwood forests and marvel at this natural wonderland and all it has to offer.


Mount up and explore the 3500 hectare reserve on horseback with our experienced equestrian guides on hand. Every competency level can be catered for and pony rides for the kids are always a hit.


Explore the nearby coastal limestone caves with your guide on hand to explain the remarkable stories behind the early dwellers of these caves. The Klipgat cave is an example of early human dwellings dating back to the Middle and late Stone Age.


Mark the end of another day in paradise from one of our sundowner spots high up on the reserve with endless vistas in every direction or on ‘Piano’ Rock as you sip your favourite drink to crashing of the waves and the breaching of the Southern Right Whales.

What's new at Grootbos - New Garden Lodge and Florilegium

The last year has been a busy one at Grootbos. We rebuilt our beloved Garden Lodge entirely and re-opened it in April 2022. We also officially launched the Grootbos Florilegium - Africa's first contemporary florilegium - which is a collection of botanical illustrations created by local and international artists, depicting the charismatic plants found on our reserve and the surrounding regions.
